The subway runs along much of Ratchadaphisik Rd. and if you take the subway (or taxi) to the Petchburi subway stop you can take a canal boat on the Khlong Saen Saeb canal most of the way to Khao San Rd.. The end of the canal boat line is near the Temple Mount and is just a few minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk to Khao San Rd.. It’s only about 15-20 minutes across town on the canal boat, by far the fastest, cheapest and most fun way to get there. You do need to switch boats at the Pratunam dock.
The Ratchadaphisik Rd. area of Din Daeng is somewhat touristy because of the many "entertainment" and nightlife venues in the area. There are many hotels and shopping in the area and has easy access to many other parts of Bangkok because of the subway which connects to the skytrain and the canals easily from the there. I wouldn’t consider it to be in the middle of the tourist area, there really isn’t a main tourist area, but it isn’t a bad area to stay in.
