Traveling by train bangkok to chiang mai?

I wanted to know how I can travel from Bangkok to chiang mai by train? also how I can buy the ticket for it(can i buy by means of internet?-which site?)+how much dose it cost and how much time it takes me to travel this distance? Thanks alot.

State Railway of Thailand website at http://www.railway.co.th/english/index.asp has information on routes, timetables, fares, and availability. Request reservations by email at info@railway.co.th.

Tickets can be bought in advance at major train stations around Bangkok (not just at Hua Lamphong).

Start from Bangkok in the evening – the trip will take about 13 hours, with slight differences in duration between different kinds of "express" service.

Take 2nd class sleeper (fan or AC is up to you, but you don’t need AC during the cold season), but do not take 3rd class (it will kill you back/buttocks) and do not take 1st class (then you better go on a low-cost airline).

Below link has a lot of detailed info

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A TREK IN CHIANG MAI WHICH DOESN'T INVOLVE ELEPHANT TREKKING?

Hi, you can buy a ticket at most stations normally a day or two in advance.

Try to book a second class sleeper.

Ask for bottom bunk, much bigger, more comfort, and you have the window to see out as you get close to Chiang Mai, its beautiful to see.

Food on board is not the best and quite expensive, for Thailand that is.

Train leaves Bangkok at 1800 arrives Chiang Mai 07:15 as long as there are no hassles.

    Cost 880 baht.

    Have a great trip.
