<br />State Railway of Thailand website at http://www.railway.co.th/english/index.asp has information on routes, timetables, fares, and availability. Request reservations by email at info@railway.co.th. </p>
<p>Tickets can be bought in advance at major train stations around Bangkok (not just at Hua Lamphong).</p>
<p>Start from Bangkok in the evening &#8211; the trip will take about 13 hours, with slight differences in duration between different kinds of &quot;express&quot; service. </p>
<p>Take 2nd class sleeper (fan or AC is up to you, but you don&#8217;t need AC during the cold season), but do not take 3rd class (it will kill you back/buttocks) and do not take 1st class (then you better go on a low-cost airline).</p>
