I went on my first O/S holiday with my sis to Phuket last year and want to do something similar soon – good night life, shopping, adventure etc with my boyfriend. We were looking at Bali (want somewhere cheap) but with all the unrest, it is probably not such a good idea. Does anyone have any other cheap, fun places to go?

how about Krabi just east of Phuket. Phuket is one of the expensive places here in Thailand Krabi in the off season is cheap and things to do. Or maybe for some wild night life try Pattaya.

I take from you question (shopping, nightlife) that you intend to hang out with other tourists. So, you better head for a tourist destination. You’ve already tried a major one (Phuket), so this time, you want to try something else, but still same same.
I therefore recommend Koh Samui (e.g., Chaweng beach), Koh Lanta (in Krabi), or Koh Samed (in Rayong). Koh Samed and Koh Lanta don’t have that much shopping but they still have a little bit of the original backpakcer feeling with beach-side bars.

Go to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan. I’ve been there in April. It’s so cool! I have never seen such a great island nightlife. Shopping is incredibly cheap. Average age of tourists are 20-30 y.o. Koh Samui is more expensive than Koh Phangan, but it’s a bigger island and you can find to do more things out there. I’d recommend you to stay at Chaweng beach area. It’s close to everything. We stayed at Chaweng Central Garden for abot $20 per person per night with A/C and hot water.
Check out the schedule of full moon parties at Koh Phangan before you go there. It’s a MUST to party there. Ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan takes less than 1 hour.

Look into Hua Hin. It’s about 2 hours from Bangkok Airport and it has everything and is cheaper that Phuket or Pattaya.
Search on line for what you want and prices etc. I always get the best airfare from China Air off their website. Good luck and have fun.

Other than Thailand, Malaysia has some beautiful islands like Langkawi or Penang (Batu Ferringhi), Vietnam has a beautiful coastline and is becoming more and more developed with some nice resorts and Halong Bay in the north is unbelievable. Malaysia’s prices are about the same as Thailand, and Vietnam is even cheaper. In Thailand, if you liked Phuket, I think you would really like Koh Samui, I like Hua Hin, but it’s definitely much more quiet than Phuket and Koh Samui. Have fun wherever you go.

I take it that you live in SEA, so you want to travel to countries in this region. Your options would be
1. Malaysia – Langkawi/Penang/Taman Negara/KL City
2. Cambodia – Siem Reap
3. Vietnam – Ho Chi Meh City/Hanoi
4. Other places in Thailand – Ayuthaya/Chiang Mai/Samui

Bali was known to back in the 1800 as a paradise exotic Island… those other Islands in South East Asia just found oppertunities and made cheap Immitations and Rip-off Islands that are know as "Fake Bali-es" that just provides beaches like any other country in the world but not Unique Culture as in Bali
