A lot of the tourists that visit Thailand on a regular basis are retirees! Some of those retirees move there for a few years too! Thailand even has a special "Retirement Visa" plan geared for those of senior years who want to move in.

Is it safe, probably safer than the nearest big city to where you live! Take normal precautions that you would do back home. If your natural instincts tell you to "not" do something – don’t! Your greatest danger will probably come from a pretty Thai girl that you invite to your hotel room and when you take a shower leaving your wallet, watch, pasport on the bureau – she leaves with them! Always use a security box for valuables and bring a lockable travel bag!

Is there a lot to do?? Depends on what you want to see and do! No one traveler does everything the same. Some travelers want to see temples and historic sites, others want to cook themselves on beaches. Then there are those who simply want to park themselves somewhere for a few weeks to relax. Pattaya has a lot of people in this age group living and relaxing there. Travel agencies are the places tourists go for signing up for tours. You will find local city tours as well as "out of town" tours available in all price ranges. Thailand does tourism pretty good. The Thai government wants you happy so you come back again and again.

Most international flights will first land in Bangkok. Plan on a few days in Bangkok before you head out of town to some other area. Also, plan on your last night to be in Bangkok again so that you won’t have to be worried about a last minute flight connections. In Bangkok get a hotel near the Skytrain route so you can use that local transportation. Meter taxi cabs are pretty cheap in Bangkok if you don’t bargain the price!

The type of visa you get depends on the passport you travel on. Usually the UK, US, Canada, Australia and many places in Europe can get a free 30 day entry permit in their passports on arrival at the airport.

Read up on Thailand before you leave on your trip. Check the visa requirements for your country. I usually book flights on my own and then get my hotels separate – usually on walk-ins!
